(GILBERT, Ariz.) Some performances stand out on their own. Others build.
For Gilbert Christian junior
Graeson Conkright, the past two weeks have been about stacking results. Round after round, tournament after tournament, until the consistency becomes the story.
Following a runner-up finish at the White Mountain Invitational, Conkright carried that form into the 23-team Metro Invitational, delivering another composed two-day performance against one of the deepest fields of the season.
At White Mountain on April 24, Conkright finished second overall with a 146 (+3), highlighted by an even-par 72 in the opening round, slotting one of his most complete rounds of the year under demanding conditions.
He followed that up at the Metro Invitational with another steady showing. After opening with a 74 at Palmbrook Country Club on May 1, Conkright responded with a 71 at Sun City Country Club, finishing fifth on day two and climbing to 12th overall with a two-day total of 145 (-1).
It was a response that reflected exactly what his season has become.
Perseverance.
Growth.
While others in the field fluctuated, Conkright stayed within himself, limiting mistakes, managing the course, and giving the Knights a dependable score each day.
Gilbert Christian's depth was on full display throughout the Metro Invite. The Knights placed fifth overall with a team score of 605 (+22), powered by contributions up and down the lineup. Freshman prodigy
Caleb Schmersahl paced the team in the final standings, finishing seventh overall with a two-day total of 143 (+1), while fellow freshman
Gavin Jones added a strong opening round of 73 to place 16th on day one.
Schmersahl's weekend underscored his continued impact. He opened with a 70 at Palmbrook, carding a clean, controlled round that kept him near the top of the leaderboard, before following with a 73 at Sun City. Across both days, he limited big numbers and capitalized on scoring opportunities- another example of the consistency that has defined his first-year campaign.
Gilbert Christian's success extends beyond its underclassmen, anchored by senior
Callaway Conkright, one of the most accomplished golfers in program history. A consistent presence at the top of the lineup, Callaway has competed in 56 matches across his career, amassing 128 birdies and 420 pars.
Earlier this season, he reminded the field of his scoring ability, earning a first-place finish on April 13 against Horizon Honors and San Tan Charter with a 33. His impressive mark was three strokes clear of the next closest competitors, teammates Schmersahl and his younger brother Graeson, who tied for second in the affair.
Callaway's experience and steady presence continue to provide a foundation for a Gilbert Christian team that blends proven leadership with emerging talent.
For
Graeson Conkright, the recent stretch is part of a larger trajectory.
Earlier this season, he captured an individual title on March 11, shooting a 38 against Scottsdale Prep and Payson. During his Gilbert Christian career, he has totaled 46 birdies and 250 pars in 41 events, a reflection of both experience, consistency, and discipline.
A steady rise.
And a player stepping into his role at exactly the right time for Gilbert Christian.
The Knights return to action on May 5, taking on ALA-West Foothills, Florence, and San Tan Foothills at 4:00pm at Trilogy Golf Club (Power Ranch). The match will also serve as Senior Day, honoring four wonderful young men in their final golf season:
Callaway Conkright,
Josiah Hunt,
Bryce Kincaid, and
Ethan Warren.
