(GILBERT, Ariz.) Gilbert Christian golf turned in an impressive two-day stretch last week, highlighted by a runner-up team finish and a pair of individual victories from freshman phenom
Caleb Schmersahl.
On April 7 at Toka Sticks Golf Club, the Knights squared off against Cicero Prep, ALA-Queen Creek, and Pusch Ridge, posting a team score of 153 to finish second overall. Pusch Ridge claimed the top spot with a 146.
Schmersahl led the charge, tying for first place in the individual field alongside Pusch Ridge's Olivia Franklin. Both golfers carded even-par 36s on the day, showcasing elite consistency throughout the round.
Gilbert Christian saw additional firepower from brothers Graeson and
Callaway Conkright, who each shot a 37 to finish in a five-way tie for third. Junior
Elese Lambeth added a top-10 finish to her card with a 40, while freshman
Gavin Jones continued to trend upward with a 43 (14th place). Senior
Bryce Kincaid rounded out the Knights' scoring with a 44.
The momentum carried into April 8 at Greyhawk Golf Club, where Gilbert Christian competed against Northland Prep, Yuma Catholic, and Scottsdale Prep.
Once again, it was Schmersahl at the top. The freshman standout captured his second consecutive individual victory, shooting a 37 to secure bragging rights on the day.
Jones, for his part, delivered his strongest performance of the year at Greyhawk, finishing 6th overall with a 41.
Graeson Conkright also cracked the top 10 with a 43, while
Callaway Conkright and Lambeth placed 15th and 19th, respectively.
In his debut season, Schmersahl has recorded four first-place finishes, winning half of the events he has entered, as he continues to establish himself as one of the premier young golfers in the state. In 2026 his resume has featured 14 birdies and 49 pars, and earlier this spring, he fired a remarkable 32 at Trilogy Golf Club (Feb. 26), one of the lowest rounds in program history.
With a talented and balanced lineup, and a rising star leading the way, the Knights are building momentum at the right time, and look poised to make noise as the season continues.
The team's next match is scheduled for Monday, April 13 at 3:00pm. Gilbert Christian is slated to face Horizon Honors and San Tan Charter on Superstition Springs Golf Course. There are five regular season matches remaining on the Knights' docket before state tournament action begins.
