(GILBERT, Ariz.) One season was enough for Gilbert Christian girls flag football to establish itself. Year two brings an opportunity to build on it.

The Knights made an immediate impression in their inaugural campaign, finishing 11-3 overall, sweeping the 3A Metro East Region at 4-0 and earning the No. 3 seed in the state tournament. Along the way, GCHS put together a 10-game winning streak, won its first playoff game and advanced to the 3A state quarterfinals.

Now, Gilbert Christian enters its second season with a familiar face leading the program and a roster that blends proven veterans with an influx of young talent.

Ronnie Sharpe takes over as head coach after serving as the Knights' defensive coordinator last season, providing continuity for a team that found success quickly. GCHS allowed 106 points across 14 games, recorded multiple shutouts and surrendered just seven points total during its undefeated run through region play.

Sharpe inherits a deep squad featuring a well-rounded senior class, varsity-tested underclassmen and a promising group of freshmen.

At the center of the offense is senior quarterback Alyssa Cervantez, who directed the Knights' attack throughout their inaugural campaign and returns to lead the unit. Also a guard on the Gilbert Christian basketball team, Cervantez brings toughness, composure and multi-sport experience to the position.

Senior Riley Bublitz gives GCHS a proven presence on both sides of the ball. Bublitz led the Knights with 13 sacks and 15 flag pulls for loss, establishing herself as one of the team's most disruptive defenders. A dedicated offseason strength program should only add to the physicality she brings to the field.

Fellow senior Madelyn Willms provides another dimension with her speed. The track standout rushed for 383 yards last fall, averaging 47.9 yards per game and finishing with a team-high four touchdowns. Her ability to create explosive plays gives the Knights another weapon out of the backfield or in space.

Senior Meredith Johnson brings value across all three phases. The Knights' kicker and punter led the Metro East with 38 points and delivered two game-winning field goals during Gilbert Christian's early-season run. Her work on special teams and defense gives GCHS an uncommon piece in the lineup.

The Knights' talent extends beyond the senior class.

Junior Adriana Vranicic returns as one of GCHS's most physical two-way players, combining size, speed and strength with the ability to line up as a runner, receiver and linebacker. She emerged as an early defensive force last fall, recording 23 tackles through the Knights' first three games, and remained an important part of the rotation throughout the season.

Junior Mackenzie Henderson gives Gilbert Christian another proven two-way playmaker. A standout for the Knights' soccer program, Henderson translated that ability quickly to flag football, finishing her sophomore campaign with 32 receptions while ranking second on the team with five interceptions. She also scored twice in a 49-6 win at Tuba City, showcasing the range that makes her an important piece for the Knights.

Junior Lilly Jones adds another veteran presence after seeing time as a blocker and rusher last fall.

Sophomores Devan Jovanovski and Brielle Sager also return after earning varsity time as freshmen. Jovanovski made an immediate impact at rusher, finishing with seven sacks, while Sager saw action at center and defensive back.

A talented freshman class has the potential to contribute early and add another layer of depth to the roster.

Together, the group gives Sharpe options throughout the lineup. Drawing athletes from basketball, soccer, track and other programs across campus, Gilbert Christian has the personnel to use different combinations on offense and defense while maintaining the speed and physicality that helped fuel its success a year ago.

The Knights enter the season ranked No. 5 in the 3A preseason rankings, with a schedule that includes every team ahead of them: No. 1 Scottsdale Christian, No. 2 Heritage Academy Laveen, No. 3 Benjamin Franklin and No. 4 Valley Christian.

GCHS opens the 2026 campaign with three consecutive road contests, beginning Sept. 15 at Heritage Academy Laveen before traveling to Scottsdale Prep on Sept. 17 and River Valley on Sept. 22. Gilbert Christian makes its home debut Sept. 24 against Tuba City and remains home Sept. 28 to face Highland Prep West.

After fall break, the Knights travel to Valley Christian on Oct. 14 before hosting Horizon Honors the following night. GCHS will also compete in the Duel at Dusk Flag Football Tournament, hosted by Benjamin Franklin, on Oct. 17.

The final weeks feature several familiar opponents. Gilbert Christian hosts Benjamin Franklin on Oct. 20 before road contests at ALA-Ironwood and Apache Junction. The Knights then return home to face Buckeye Union on Oct. 29 before closing the regular season Nov. 3 against defending 3A state champion Scottsdale Christian.

The matchup with Benjamin Franklin carries some history of its own. The Chargers ended Gilbert Christian's first postseason run with a 21-0 victory in the state quarterfinals last fall, giving the Knights an opportunity to face the team that brought their impressive debut campaign to an end.

For a program entering only its second season, Gilbert Christian has already created something many young teams are still trying to develop: expectations.

The Knights know what it feels like to win a region title, string together double-digit victories and play meaningful football in November. Now, with a coach who knows the program, a veteran core and a growing collection of young talent, GCHS enters 2026 with both a foundation to build on and plenty of room to grow.
