(GILBERT, Ariz.) Gilbert Christian volleyball registered its first 3A Metro victory on Monday, coming from behind to defeat Benjamin Franklin in four sets (23-25, 25-22, 25-14, 25-14). Sophomore Lillie Duitsman was an all-around menace in the contest with 19 kills (.400), 12 digs and 5 aces, while junior Sidney Loth logged a 23-assist, 10-dig double-double for the Knights.
Freshman Kendall Moore aided the Knights' offensive productivity with 17 assists of her own, and senior Michelle Lopez managed to dish a notable five assists while playing in the back row for GCHS. Lopez also recorded nine digs and an ace in the match.
The Knights' accuracy on the setting front benefitted athletic sophomore Sienna Cathey, who tallied double-digits (10) on the front line against the Chargers. Junior Alexia Heyn, sophomore Ashley Gast and senior Kaila Aston also reaped the rewards, compiling seven, seven and six putdowns, respectively, for Gilbert Christian.
With the win, GCHS moves to 2-1 overall. The Chargers drop to 1-4 on the year following the loss.
Volleyball returns home for another regional match-up on Wednesday September 11th (6:00pm), against ALA-Ironwood. The team is also slated to play Thursday, on the road at Seton Catholic.
