(TUCSON, Ariz.) Boys' basketball started the 2024-25 season with a bang, defeating Sabino 81-78 on the road by way of an Owen Fermoyle three-point bucket at the buzzer. The Knights got 36-points from senior Jace Olson, and a 20-point, nine-rebound, five-assist, three-block, two-steal performance from the contest's ultimate hero, Fermoyle.
"This was a tough Sabino team, they had no quit in them," Head Coach Jason Pasquariello said. "For them to play that hard with a new coach is impressive. I respect what Coach Beckwith has done to get his guys to buy in and play with that determination so early in the season. This was a fun game! It was a battle from start to finish, and we were fortunate to have the ball on the final possession, where Owen found the space to get that shot off. Overall, I am very pleased with how well we competed."
Hitting double-digit scoring in his first high school game was Gilbert Christian's freshman guard Colin Burke. Burke went four-for-seven from the floor to log 10 points, knocking down two from deep, while grabbing a pair of steals for the Knights.
Olson hit five from downtown, and was lights-out from the charity stripe (13/13). He also grabbed five boards and dished a pair of assists in the affair.
Seniors Logan Lucero and Tyler Burr wrapped up the Knights' scoring with eight and seven points, respectively. The duo also combined for 13 of the team's 20 assists on the night, with Burr narrowly claiming the top spot, dishing seven. Lucero managed five rebounds, three of which were offensive, for Gilbert Christian.
Sabino won its season opener against Desert View 84-26. The Sabercats drop to 1-1 overall with the loss. The Knights move to 1-0 following the clutch victory.
Gilbert Christian's home opener is scheduled for Tuesday, November 26th at 7:00pm. The Knights are slated to host ALA-West Foothills.
