(MESA, Ariz.) Sometimes a game played across 100 yards comes down to inches, and on Saturday afternoon, it was the narrowest of margins that separated Gilbert Christian (14-2-1) from a state title.

The No. 2 Knights fell in a 2-1 overtime heartbreaker to top-ranked Northwest Christian (16-1) in the AIA Girls Soccer 3A State Championship, closing a remarkable postseason run just shy of the finish line.

After a deadlocked first half, Gilbert Christian lit up the scoreboard early in the second, when sophomore Brinkley Stansberry found the back of the net on the breakaway to give the Knights a 1-0 advantage over the Crusaders.

But Northwest Christian wasn't finished, answering with a moment that felt almost improbable: a free kick that grazed just over the outstretched glove of freshman goalkeeper Rachel Coffelt and arced into the net to even the score.

Coffelt, who finished with eight saves, was outstanding throughout the match, repeatedly denying quality chances and keeping the Knights in control for long stretches.

With the score knotted at 1-1 after regulation, the game moved into overtime, where Northwest Christian capitalized on its lone opportunity, netting the golden goal in the opening 10-minute period to secure the title.

Despite the result, Gilbert Christian's effort and resilience were on full display, going toe-to-toe with the top-ranked team in the state and proving once again they belong among Arizona's elite.

The Knights say goodbye to two key seniors in Amber Peterson and Jersi Wilson, both of whom are set to continue their careers at the collegiate level. Peterson closes her standout career as the 3A Metro Region and 3A Conference Defender of the Year.

With all but two players returning from this state runner-up squad, Gilbert Christian will bring back a battle-tested, hungry core that should be incredibly dangerous in 2026-27.
