Big First Round Win for Knights

Knights Mercy-Rule Warriors 8-0

2/13/2025 2:30:00 PM

(GILBERT, Ariz.) Fifth-seeded Gilbert Christian (9-3) dominated from start to finish on Wednesday, defeating No. 12 ALA-Ironwood 8-0 by way of mercy rule. Half of the Knights goals belonged to senior Caprice Chiuchiolo, who netted her 36th, 37th, 38th and 39th career goals against the Warriors.

Chiuchiolo's 38th, the Knights' fifth of the day, broke the GCHS all-time record for goals in a single season (37, Michaela Burke 2017 & Hannah Burke 2020). She is the now the all-time leader in career points, career assists, career goals, and goals in a single year.

Freshman Brinkley Stansberry put the Knights on the board early, scoring 59 seconds into the match-up with a beautiful unassisted shot from the far right sideline.

Next up was Chiuchiolo's first, a breakaway goal made possible by excellent passing up the field by senior Kinley Rhineheimer and junior Jersi Wilson.

Wilson was in on the action for the third as well, sending a dime to sophomore Millie Torre who beat the Warriors' keeper to give the Knights a 3-0 edge at 26:30. Senior Ella Cariveau was also essential to the play, and was credited with the secondary assist for her part in facilitating it.

With just under three minutes remaining in the opening half, the Chiuchiolo girls made a connection. Sophomore Angie Chiuchiolo found her big sister open, and Caprice found the back of the net to secure the 4-0 lead.

In the second, sophomore Charlotte Shimkus and freshman Kelsey Peterson logged assists on the Knights' fifth score, an unreachable Chiuchiolo arching lob into the opposite corner.

The sixth came from Wilson with 23:47 to play. Fighting for control in the box, she got a foot on an airborne ball, which went soaring up and over the awestruck pack and into the Warriors' goal.

Freshman Stephanie Noble notched the seventh of the affair at the 11:25 mark, tracking down a rebound on the right side of the box after a block by ALA's keeper, to score her fourth of the season.

The final goal belonged to Chiuchiolo, and was assisted by Shimkus. Shimkus, a defender, has 23 points (8 goals, 7 assists) in her sophomore campaign. She ranks 13th statewide (any class, any level) in points at her position.

GCHS advances to the quarterfinal round of the 2025 AIA Girls Soccer Championship Tournament with the win. The Knights will face No. 4 ALA-West Foothills on the road this Saturday, February 15th at 12:00pm in the round of eight (TICKETS). The two teams met earlier in the year at Gilbert Christian, where the Knights collected a 7-2 victory.
