(MESA, Ariz.) Some stories feel scripted. Others are earned the hard way. On February 21st at Mesa High School, the Gilbert Christian boys soccer team signed its name in the history books with a little bit of both, posting a 2-1 victory over Yuma Catholic in the 2025-26 AIA 3A State Championship to hoist the coveted golden trophy for the second straight season.

The top-seeded Knights arrived ready to defend their crown: and defend they did. Senior TK Reesing, senior Lief Littlefield, senior Nik Vranicic, and junior goalkeeper Logan Brown anchored a composed and disciplined back line, limiting the Shamrocks' attack to just a single goal across 80 minutes of play.

The championship clash carried no shortage of history. Just one year removed from their first-ever state title, a 2-1 victory over Yuma Catholic, the Knights found themselves staring down the same Shamrocks' squad with everything on the line. And once again, Gilbert Christian delivered. History didn't just repeat itself: it reinforced a program rapidly building a legacy.

But this run was anything but effortless. The Knights' only loss of the season came in their opener: a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Yuma Catholic. From that moment on, Gilbert Christian responded with purpose, rattling off 14 straight wins to earn the tournament's top seed.

Yuma Catholic entered the final as a formidable opponent, ranked No. 2 and undefeated against Arizona teams all season. The Shamrocks had only been tested out of state, tying and falling to California competition in Freedom play, setting the stage for a championship match-up between two of the most battle-tested squads in the region.

When the moment demanded it, Gilbert Christian's stars rose once again. Senior standouts (and two of the most accomplished players to ever wear a Knights' kit) Noah Cooper and Noah Collier delivered the championship goals. Junior Elijah Mims and senior Brady Fredrickson each recorded assists, helping orchestrate the attack with precision and poise.

With the match hanging in the balance, it was Collier who provided the defining moment. Breaking free on a thrilling run in the final game of his high school career, the speedy forward showcased his field awareness and impeccable timing, drawing the Shamrocks goalkeeper off his line before blasting the ball into the back of the net. The go-ahead score would stand as the game-winner, earning Collier Most Valuable Player honors.

In the midfield, junior Leo Cochran, the 3A Metro Region Player of the Year, proved to be a true difference-maker, relentlessly winning 50/50 ball after 50/50 ball to tilt possession in the Knights' favor and disrupt the Shamrocks' rhythm. It was a complete team performance that was built on grit, discipline, and execution.

Under the unwavering leadership of the 2025-26 3A Metro Region and 3A Conference Coach of the Year, Devon Dickinson, Gilbert Christian has transformed from a program chasing its first title into one defining a standard.

Back-to-back champions. A legacy in the making.
