(GILBERT, Ariz.) Top-seeded Gilbert Christian boys soccer is headed to the AIA 3A State Championship match for the third consecutive season, as the defending champion Knights secured a high-energy 5-3 semifinal victory over No. 5 Tanque Verde on Wednesday night.
From the opening whistle, GCHS played like a team on a mission. Senior
Noah Cooper wasted no time setting the tone, breaking free just three minutes into play, shaking his defender and slotting the ball into the left side of the net to give the Knights an early lead.
The Knights struck again at the 34:34 mark, this time from the right side, where sophomore
Kai Lundberg found the back of the net. "Playoff Kai," who has built a reputation for clutch postseason performances early in his career, delivered again following a well-executed corner sequence. Senior
Brady Fredrickson recorded the assist.
Not to be outdone, senior
Noah Collier extended the lead to 3-0 with a jaw-dropping burst of speed, outrunning the defense in full stride. With the keeper charging, Collier showed veteran composure, waiting until the perfect moment before blasting the ball past the Hawks' goalkeeper.
Tanque Verde answered with a goal of its own at the 20:24 mark to make it 3-1, but the Knights responded almost immediately. At 19:49, Cooper delivered a perfectly placed ball into the middle, where Lundberg dove in for a header- his second score of the night- to push the lead to 4-1.
Midway through the second half, Gilbert Christian added another off a set piece. Junior Leo Cochran capitalized on the Hawks' foul, sending a well-placed ball into the box where Collier rose above the defense and connected on a header to extend the advantage to 5-1.
Tanque Verde battled until the final whistle, adding two late goals, but the outcome was never in doubt.
The Knights now turn their attention to Saturday's championship showdown against No. 2 Yuma Catholic- a match-up layered with history. Yuma Catholic handed Gilbert Christian a 4-2 loss in the season opener on Dec. 1, a result that sparked what has since become a 14-game winning streak. The two teams also met in last year's title match, where the Knights claimed a thrilling 2-1 victory.
One (more) game. Two elite teams. A chance to secure back-to-back state titles.
The first 100 students will receive free entry to the historic match. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00PM at Mesa High School. The Gilbert Christian girls team will compete for their own state title earlier in the day (4:00PM start).
