(PHOENIX) The Gilbert Christian swim team shined at the AIA Division III State Championships on Saturday at Phoenix Country Day School, closing out the season with a wave of school records, standout finishes, and top-five team honors.
The girls team delivered a historic performance, placing fifth overall with 193 points and setting three new school records along the way.
Leading the charge was junior
Mackenna Bloom, who claimed third place in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.97) and 500 freestyle (5:20.72), setting a pair of GCHS records with her momentous effort. Teammate
Brooke Horton also had a standout showing, finishing sixth in the 500-free to bolster the team's total.
In the boys 200-yard individual medley final, senior
Kyler Tolson turned in one of the meet's most dramatic finishes, earning third place with a school-record 2:00.85. He later returned for the 500 free, finishing second in a heartbreaking 4:50.98, missing gold by just three-hundredths of a second, an incredible feat considering he was recovering from illness earlier in the week.
Other top individual finishes included
Aria Fitzpatrick (11th, 200 IM, PR),
Peyton Bloom (16th, 200 IM; 12th, 100 breast, PR),
Olivia Bracke (19th, 100 breast, PR), and
Addison Goodwin, who reached the A Final in the 100 freestyle, placing among the top-10.
The Knights' relays were equally impressive, showcasing depth and teamwork:
- 200 Medley Relay: 13th (Claire Horton, Bracke, Peyton Bloom, Jacklyn Korb)
- 200 Free Relay: 5th place and new school record (1:46.16) with Horton, Fitzpatrick, Bloom, and Goodwin
- 400 Free Relay: 7th place and new school record (3:53.14) with Bloom, Fitzpatrick, Goodwin, and Horton
For the boys, the Tolson brothers scored all of the team's 46 points, highlighted by Kyler's runner-up finish in the 500 free and Teagan's 16th-place showing in the same event. Together, the brothers exemplified the program's spirit and determination, with Kyler closing out a remarkable career and Teagan carrying the torch forward in a proud legacy for both the Tolson name and the Knights' swim program.
