GCHS Upsets ALA-West Foothills

1/24/2025 3:25:00 PM

(GILBERT, Ariz.) Gilbert Christian (6-2) jumped past ALA-West Foothills (7-2-1) in the 3A Conference girls' soccer rankings following the Knights' decisive 7-2 victory over the Guardians on Thursday evening. No. 4 GCHS got two goals and two assists from senior captain Caprice Chiuchiolo in front of the elated home crowd, while freshman standout Brinkley Stansberry netted an impressive pair of her own in the affair.

Chiuchiolo's record-breaking career goal total now sits at 97.

The Knights trailed early, giving up a goal at the 24:30-mark following a Guardians' corner.

Refusing to relent, Gilbert Christian continued in its pursuit to overcome the deficit, just missing on several close balls before freshman Reese Tammany connected at 16:31 to bring the contest to even.

The tie was short-lived, however, as ALA-WF capitalized on a defensive lapse 23 seconds later to send an unexpected shot into the Knights' goal.

Six minutes ticked off of the game-clock before Chiuchiolo made her move, scoring at 10:08 courtesy of fluid passing from sophomore Meredith Johnson and freshman Mackenzie Henderson to tie the match at 2-all.

Sophomore Millie Torre broke the stalemate with a powerful blast from the middle minutes later to give Gilbert Christian a 3-2 edge before the break.

The second half was a different story, as Stansberry ripped it wide open, giving the Knights sufficient breathing room with her back-to-back highlight reel scores at 32:45 and 30:43.

For the next 15 minutes, the GCHS defense battled, rallying behind goalkeeper Michelle Lopez to protect the Knights' 5-2 lead.

With 12:00 remaining in the game, the hard work paid off again. Junior Jersi Wilson secured possession in the backfield, finding Johnson on the move. Johnson, for her part, had the wherewithal to look immediately up field, one-touching a perfect through ball to a streaking Chiuchiolo who finished with her left to make it 6-2.

Johnson's unselfish play was rewarded minutes later, as she closed the contest with one of her own, and secured bragging rights for the Knights.

Lopez notched the win in goal for GCHS.

Gilbert Christian is slated to compete at home again on Saturday, in a 10:00am match against Page.
