(GILBERT, Ariz.) Softball battled with No. 14 ALA-Ironwood on Monday at Titan Solar Park, but was ultimately defeated, 9-5, after seven full innings of play. Freshman Maddy Harmon was standout in the match-up, going three-for-three with a pair of doubles against the Warriors' top hurler.
Senior Jaidyn Wilson also had considerable success in the contest, coming up with big hits at the plate, and clutch plays in the field for Gilbert Christian. During the game, Wilson was overheard commenting on the impressive speed of the opposing pitcher, though it didn't seem to phase her as she finished the affair with a double, a triple, and two runs scored.
Driving in three of the Knights' runs was freshman pitcher Meredith Whitehurst. Whitehurst threw a complete game for GCHS, collecting 11 strikeouts against the veteran Ironwood squad.
Sophomore Devin Vanni looked confident and comfortable in the batter's box in the affair, as she managed a pair of knocks to hit .500 in the game. She also drove in a run, and stole a base, to keep the contest within reach.
Using an eagle eye to reach base twice via walk for GCHS was sophomore Gigi Boggs. Harmon was the only other player to draw a walk in the competition.
The Knights are at No. 1 Valley Christian on Thursday for a 6:00pm showdown. The Trojans are unbeaten in 2024.
