(GILBERT, Ariz.) Girls' soccer put on a show in its home opener, defeating Coolidge 12-0 in 3A soccer action. Eight different players netted scores for Gilbert Christian, and the Knights' defense prevented the Bears from taking a shot on goal in the mercy-ruled affair.
Sophomore defender Charlotte Shimkus was first to light up the scoreboard, finding the back of the net off of a well-placed corner from senior Caprice Chiuchiolo.
Next up was senior Kinley Rhineheimer, who collected a pass from junior teammate Jersi Wilson, and blasted one past Coolidge's keeper to put GCHS out front 2-0.
The floodgates opened around the 25-minute mark, as freshman Brinkley Stansberry scored a pair in a two-minute span to extend the margin to 4-0, before Chiuchiolo took advantage of her own opportunity at 22:17, sending one flying from the middle to log the Knights' fifth.
Freshman Reese Tammany made it 6-0 less than 30 seconds later, connecting from 15-yards out off of a Millie Torre dish.
Four minutes passed before Chiuchiolo struck again, this time courtesy of Rhineheimer's field vision, giving the Knights a 7-0 edge with 17:17 remaining in the half.
Chiuchiolo netted a third at 16:41, her ninth of the season, notching the hat trick by way of an on-target pass from freshman teammate Kelsey Peterson.
Sophomore Riley Bublitz added her own goal to the tally with three minutes on the clock, securing a 9-0 lead for the Knights at the break.
The second half was cut short due to the mercy-rule, but featured Stanberry's third of the evening, a goal from Wilson, and a score by sophomore Meredith Johnson.
Chiuchiolo finished the match with four assists, and tied Stansberry for the scoring crown with three goals. Rhineheimer and K. Peterson both recorded a pair of dishes for the Knights.
With the win, the Knights move to 2-0 on the year.
Gilbert Christian is back in action on Thursday, traveling to Tonopah Valley HS for a 6:00pm showdown.
