(THATCHER, Ariz.) Gilbert Christian's football season ended in the first round of the 2024 AIA State Championships on November 8th following a 56-14 road loss to Thatcher. The Knights' scores came from junior Bennett Juve and sophomore Malachi Ahlman.
Senior quarterback Tyler Burr, who completes his prestigious career with 59 touchdown passes (2nd all-time) and 5192 passing yards (2nd all-time), threw for 279 yards in the contest, connecting on half of his 34 tosses.
Finishing his incredible career as Gilbert Christian's all-time leader in all-purpose yards, and the only player to break the 5,000-yard mark, is Sam Webb. Webb logged 5,665 yards in his four-year stint for the Knights, scoring 60 touchdowns (2nd all-time, 1st at running back). His 4,230-rushing yards seal his place in history as the best running back to have graced the field for GCHS, and it was not a close race. The previous record-holder (A. Sherman, 2014) accumulated 1,975 yards.
Hyatt Lang also joined the list of GCHS greats following his junior campaign. Lang becomes the Knights' new record-holder for total tackles (271), breaking Caleb Young's 2017 mark (268). In addition, Lang surpassed S. Lanzel's 2016 tackle-for-loss mark (39.5), to earn the GCHS all-time TFL crown (50.5).
Gilbert Christian bids farewell to eleven amazing seniors who have impacted the program with their leadership and talent. The Knights finish the year at 6-5 overall.
