(QUEEN CREEK, Ariz.) Gilbert Christian girls' soccer wrapped up the regular season on Tuesday with its perfect 12-0 record intact, as it defeated the reigning state champion Benjamin Franklin Chargers by a final score of 2-0. The victory earned the top-ranked Knights bragging rights heading into the 2023-24 AIA State Soccer Championship Tournament, and more importantly, the elusive 3A East Regional Title.
With the loss, Ben Franklin drops to 10-2 overall and 5-1 in regional action.
The Knights got plenty of looks in the physical and hard-fought affair, and were aided by a Chargers' own goal off of a rocket from junior Caprice Chiuchiolo in the first half of play, before freshman Mila Russo connected as the final minute ticked off of the clock to seal the deal for GCHS.
Chiuchiolo was credited with the first score of the match. Russo's goal was assisted by senior Jaidyn Wilson.
Gilbert Christian's tenacious defense logged yet another clean sheet in the contest.
"The girls were locked in and ready to take what was theirs," Head Coach Hector Orellana said. "So proud to say that our girls are regional champions! Volemos!"
