(TUCSON, Ariz.) Girls' soccer kept its perfect record in tact with a 3-2 victory on fourth-ranked Pusch Ridge's turf on Friday evening. The No. 1 Knights are 8-0 on the season, with just four regular season matches left on the docket.
Senior Daniella Orellana posted the Knights' first goal, taking advantage of a poor clearance to give her team a 1-0 edge and some breathing room midway through the first half.
Next up was freshman Mila Russo, who created an opportunity of her own, breaking past defenders and beating the goalie to notch the Knights' second of the day at the 34:34 mark.
The two teams battled for 20 minutes in the second before Russo struck again, connecting on a cross from classmate Charlotte Shimkus to give Gilbert Christian a 3-2 advantage.
The Lions would find the back of the net one last time, but it would not be enough as the Knights' defense held strong to collect the 3-2 win.
"I am very pleased with the girls' performances this week," Head Coach Hector Orellana said. "I have to give credit to this Pusch Ridge team, as they came out to compete. Our girls are playing beautiful soccer. I love that they are communicating and pulling for each other. Our captains, Caprice, Kinley and Daniella are doing an excellent job keeping the team focused. This was a break-out performance for Mila, who didn't seem phased by having three games in one week. She is such a talented player, and I am so happy that she's a part of our team."
San Tan Foothills is the next obstacle for GCHS. The Knights are scheduled to take on the Sabercats at home on Tuesday, beginning at 4:00pm.
