10/23/2023 2:49:00 PM

(QUEEN CREEK, Ariz.) Gilbert Christian's football team left its heart on the field Friday, leading 7-0 and dominating defensively for the entire first half before falling 14-7 to Benjamin Franklin on the road. Junior quarterback Tyler Burr scored the Knights' lone touchdown, and boasted team-best totals in passing (143 yards) and rushing (51 yards) in the contest.

Burr heaved an on-target Hail Mary in the final seconds of the ball game, but it was not meant to be, as the Chargers claimed the come-from-behind win.

Burr's 32-yard rushing touchdown put the Knights on the board with 5:42 to play in the second quarter, showing off his versatility and athletic prowess as he gave his squad a 6-0 edge. Senior kicker Kaleb Powell added to the tally with an extra point to make it 7-0.

The Chargers scored in the third on a 19-yard toss, and again in the fourth on a 12-yard pass.

Senior Nate Dickinson, sophomore Kamari Stanbury and Powell were Burr's favorite targets in the game, recording 57, 48 and 41 receiving yards, respectively, for Gilbert Christian.

Defensively, the Knights were led by sophomore Hyatt Lang, who tallied 10 solo tackles, seven tackle-assists, a sack and five tackles for loss. Powell was next in line with eight solos and two TFL, while junior Colton Rogers boasted 11 tackle assists, three solos and a TFL. JuniorĀ Josh Rich and senior Sam Vance were also in on a ton of action, as they combined for 11 tackle assists in the affair.

Benjamin Franklin improves to 7-2 with the win. The Knights remain above .500 at 5-4, with one regular season contest remaining.

Gilbert Christian will host Tempe High School next Friday for homecoming. The contest is scheduled for 7:00pm, but event festivities will begin at 5:00pm.
