(CHANDLER, Ariz.) Gilbert Christian tennis logged a pair of resounding wins against Seton Catholic Prep on Wednesday, with the girls zeroing the Sentinels, and the boys collecting a 6-3 victory.
Five GCHS seniors, Brady Albert, JP Russo, Mason Berkshire,
Megan Russell, and
Kendall Hayes, were recognized for their respective contributions to the program following the conclusion of the match.
Russell made the most of her senior night, easily defeating the opposition 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1, before teaming up with classmate Hayes in doubles to post a dominant 8-2 point. Hayes, who suited up at No. 3 in singles, cruised to victory with a 6-1, 6-2 effort against her SCP counterpart, Grace Canon.
In the twos showdown sophomore
Lauren Kheshvadjian turned up the heat, taking down Seton's Ellie Brockman 6-1, 6-1. The Knights final singles points were courtesy of the junior class: number four
Hailey Fincher (6-4, 6-4), number five
Sophia Kiesow (6-1, 6-1), and number six
Kirby Bogen (6-4, 6-4).
The remaining doubles points were more of the same, with Kiesow and Fincher quickly besting their two-spot opponents 8-2, while Bogen and sophomore
Olivia Larsen took care of business (8-4) against Seton's threes pair.
On the boys' side, Albert snagged a senior night win, with a 6-2, 6-1 singles showing at No. 4 for the Knights. His classmates, Berkshire and Russo put forth monumental efforts in the No. 1 and No. 3 slots, but eventually succumbed in a pair of exhausting three-set battles.
A pair of freshmen recorded the Knights' remaining singles points, as Landon Dunn earned a 6-2, 6-4 point against senior Ray Grover at number two, and Logan Gerber pulled through in a 6-4, 7-5 nailbiter at number six.
Gilbert Christian's final three points came on the doubles' courts. The Dunn/Berkshire duo surpassed their #1 competitors 8-2, before Russo and Albert earned a redeeming 8-1 fourth-year win at twos. In the threes match-up, the result was more of the same as freshman Marston Hayes and Gerber represented at 8-4 to send their upperclassmen teammates home with the big team victory.
