(SAN MARCOS, Calif.) Gilbert Christian cross country traveled to Cal State San Marcos over the weekend to compete in the 4th Annual Grit N Grind XC Challenge. It turned out to be less of a challenge, and more of a welcome reprieve, giving the Knights' runners an opportunity to compete in near-ideal conditions, away from the surface of the sun. With 70-degree overcast skies, gentle rolling hills, and a DJ setting the tone, the stage was set for breakthrough performances, which the team delivered- first class, with a bow.
On the boys' side, history was made. Junior Asa Jones set a new school record in the 3-mile with an electrifying 15:29.9 (equivalent to a 16:17 AZ 5K), breaking the previous mark held by Logan Pinkerton. Newcomer Weston Ford also etched his name into the record books, becoming the new freshman record holder with a 3-mile time of 15:59 (16:48 5K), crossing the finish just under the 16-minute barrier. Weston's effort also secured him a first-place victory in the freshman/sophomore race.
The girls achieved a major milestone as well, with the top five runners all finishing under 25 minutes- one of the team's goals heading into the meet. The effort showed significant growth and renewed determination, with eyes now set firmly on competing at the state meet in November.
Nearly every GCHS athlete who ran in the meet left the CSUSM course with a PR or season-best equivalent, showcasing the depth and development of the team midway through the season.
"This weekend was more than just the fast times," Head Coach Amy Ford said. "It was marked by the joy of competing together and celebrating as a team, and it was capped off with a memorable afternoon at the beach, spending time swimming, boogie boarding, and building team unity."
The Knights now look ahead to one last meet before fall break- the Glendale Showcase, which is on the docket for Saturday, October 4th. Races are scheduled to begin at 8:00am.
