(QUEEN CREEK, Ariz.) Sophomore Unesu Machiri led the Knights with 24 points in a well-rounded team victory against San Tan Foothills on Thursday. With the win, No. 21 Gilbert Christian finishes the regular season at 9-8 overall, and 3-3 (4th) in 3A South Central play.
The Knights scored a whopping 69 points in the contest and outdid the Sabercats in nearly every statistical category.
Junior Kaila Aston continued her streak of break-out games, scoring 14, to go along with her six rebounds. She also recorded two assists, two blocks, and a steal in the game. Earlier in the week, against Globe High School, Aston dropped 17 points and grabbed nine off of the glass in 14 minutes of play for the Knights.
GCHS out-boarded STFHS 46-35, largely due to the effort of Chloe Lehman, Mileigh Allan, Alyssa Cervantez and Addie Hansen, who registered six, six, five and five rebounds, respectively, in the win.
Defensively, freshman Lillie Duitsman took the cake, with four steals, though Cervantez was not far behind, with three of her own. Duitsman also dished three assists in the affair.
Rounding out the scoring were sophomore Tylee Fox and Cervantez, with seven apiece, and junior Melissa Johnson with six.
San Tan Foothills falls to 5-13 (1-5 region) with the loss.
The 2023-24 AIA Girls' Basketball State Championship Tournament playoff bracket will be released on Saturday, February 10th.
